Childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is of particular concern. Annual weighing and measuring of children in the first and last years of primary school in summer 2007 showed:
- 8.9% of reception children were obese, with a further 13.2% who were overweight.
- 16.3% of children in Year 6 were obese and an additional 14.6% were overweight.
There has been little change in these figures over the last 3 years of monitoring. Boys are slightly more likely than girls to be obese or overweight. There is also evidence that there is a correlation between childhood obesity and living in an area of high social deprivation, but this is not evident in the case of the overweight8.
