Bullying
Data around bullying can be difficult to obtain and use, particularly when collected from different sources, such as various surveys or different agencies, as often definitions of bullying change or victims of bullying may report it in more than one place or not at all.
- Key results from the 2007 Youth Survey (sent to all Herefordshire 13-18 year olds on the Connexions database) indicate that 24% of young people aged 13-18 years had been bullied in the last 12 months.
- Similarly results from the 2006 Teenage Lifestyle Survey (amongst 11 to 15 year olds) suggest that 24% of pupils had been bullied at or near school in the last 12 months; a further 14% said they didn't know.
- The Tellus Survey 2007 (age 12-15 year olds) results indicate that 30% of pupils were bullied at least once or more times in the month before the survey.
Even with some differences in definitions of bullying for these three surveys, they still show that between a quarter and a third of young people felt they had been bullied. More information about types of bullying experienced, where this occurs and what impacts this has, e.g. on health, can be found in each of the survey reports (see reference section 39).
Results from the 2006 Teenage Lifestyle Survey (amongst 11 to 15 year olds) also provides information about pupils who reported that they had bullied someone else at school in the last 12 months. Overall, 8% of pupils said they had bullied someone else at school in the last 12 months, a further 14% said they didn’t know.
Table 1. Proportion of pupils that have bullied someone else at school in the last 12 months by gender and school year

More males than females said that they had bullied other pupils, with a higher proportion in Year 10 than the other school years. Proportions of females that had bullied others increased with age, from 3% in Year 7 to 9% of females in Year 10.
